Anna needs to tell Edwin that she recieved a telegram from Mills College asking if he would like a degree of P H D (honary) given on the 13th. She wrote a letter of acceptance for him. Virgil is in England. Grierson died. The Maxims are staying at the lake. H.M. left $400.00 to advertise his poetry book. Dr. (Shedgres?) parcels came.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
